As a character he isn’t nearly as fleshed out as light, or L or even Matsuda. Him and Mello are two dimensional and serve only one purpose, to defeat light. Its English translation, No Matter How I Look At It, It’s You Guys’ Fault I’m Not Popular isn’t much better.

Most of his toys are the types that need to be moved manually, such as his action figures, darts, and dolls. His electronic toys include his remote-control rubber ducks and a battery-powered train. The characters of Mello and Near had some potential but it was never properly utilized. Many of their attempts to apprehend Light fell flat in comparison to the first half. The funny yet dark interplay between Light and the Shinigami who gave him the notebook, Ryuk.
Near prioritizes stopping the murders at any cost, rather than trying to win the game, or solve the puzzle. L, on the other hand, knew that Light and Misa had been Kira, but did not want to execute them. Instead, L wanted to solve the puzzle instead of stopping the murders. I think a lot of the hate is because people think he’s just a copy of L. That may be true at the beginning, but I think he develops into a character very different from L. Light, his memory recovered, orders Misa to begin killing after Higuchi dies.
